Artist Skybox

Listening to Chicago's Skybox might actually make one believe that its particular patch of indie-rock territory is still a place for the eccentric to stretch out a bit, rather than a pit for the uncreative to cower in. Skybox's new album, Morning After Cuts, begins with a track ("In A Dream") that threatens to blend in with so much blatant dance-pop fluff. Then it goes on to keep alive the promise of 2006's Arco Iris with creepy cabaret antics, rattling about with the rhythm of a roughly handled marionette and building on leader Tim Ellis' voice, which theatrically works in a bit of The Dresden Dolls' mincing menace and an old-timey croon that recalls Mr. Show's "Monsters Of Megaphone" sketch.
