A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Smashing Pumpkins

  • Smashing Pumpkins

Beloved when they were coming up and bemoaned when they were at the height of their powers, The Smashing Pumpkins have never lacked for ambition. The prescient swirling din of their 1991 debut, Gish, only continued to get bigger and bigger as the years went on and budgets grew, and even Smashing Pumpkins’ storied dismantling was big and complicated. So much so that the version of the band reconstituted by Billy Corgan for 2007’s Zeitgeist bore little resemblance to the original (at least in terms of staffing). Corgan came back in 2008 with a new single, “G.L.O.W.,” which he has said will be followed by a concept album set to play out in several volumes over the next few years.
