Artist Some Came Running

A curious mélange of Peyton Place-style small-town melodrama and hard-boiled postwar slice-of-life, 1958's Some Came Running is rendered even more curious for its direction by Vicente Minnelli, better known for his rich big-screen musicals. But his sense of scale and grandiosity carries over here, pouring gorgeous Technicolor over returning veteran Frank Sinatra and his boozy, heart-struck young lover Shirley MacLaine. Those who only know the Rat Pack's acting from such indulgent vanity projects as the original Ocean's Eleven are well-advised to check out the performances of Sinatra (playing a stand-in for author James Jones, in a film that serves as something of a sequel to From Here To Eternity for both men) and especially Dean Martin as a lowlife gambler who pals around with him. A departure for almost everyone involved, Some Came Running pays off well.
