Artist Sonny Rollins

One of few elder saxophone giants still alive and blowing, Sonny Rollins continues to pack a punch comparable to his early force. He soared highest in the late ’50s and ’60s—a prime punctuated by a coolest-ever hiatus spent playing alone at night on a New York bridge—with albums such as Saxophone Colossus and East Broadway Run Down, which features a barreling tone that’s tough and graceful at the same time. Certifiable classics have been harder to come by in recent years (2006’s Sonny, Please being his most recent water-treading effort), but his long run on the legacy circuit has been fruitful indeed.
