Soulfly
Soulfly singer-guitarist Max Cavalera was the driving force behind groundbreaking Brazilian metal band Sepultura, so it was no surprise that his next project pushed metal’s boundaries. Over seven albums, Soulfly has expanded its sound to include a diverse range of influences—the band utilized Serbian, Turkish, and Russian musicians on 2005’s Dark Ages, and created a weird mix of death metal and pop on 2008’s Conquer. But metal fans need not worry: Cavalera maintains the sort of bone-crushingly heavy riffing that his fans have come to expect. Soulfly’s latest record, Omen, definitely delivers on that front. The lead single, “Rise Of The Fallen,” is straight scream-core, with pounding drums and bass solidly intact.
