Southern Culture On The Skids

Southern Culture On The Skids

For a lot of bands, the live show is where the action is, and that’s especially true in the case of Southern Culture On The Skids. Sure, a song such as “Eight Piece Box” is fun to hear on CD, but only in concert will you get a chance to actually catch and devour chicken tossed into the crowd from the song’s titular KFC bucket. The band’s appetite for live spectacle and indulgent novelty (and live novelty and indulgent spectacle) powered it through the late ’00s, but SCOTS returns to original parodies/embraces of the redneck life on 2010’s The Kudzu Ranch. The record adds Ennio Morricone scores and psychedelia to its stylistic combo plate of rockabilly, surf, and country, served pipin’ hot.
