Speedfreaks
Punk bands love to talk about the old school, but Milwaukee’s Speedfreaks actually lived it, coming out of the city’s mid-’80s hardcore scene and gaining fans one basement show at a time. Until recently, the band’s only recorded document was the Freakshow cassette tape from 1988. But after re-forming in 2007 and reigniting interest in the band with a series of talked-about live shows, Speedfreaks headed into the studio with Shane Hochstetler of Call Me Lightning to record this year’s Survive. More than half of Survive is composed of new songs that rock with as much reckless abandon as the old material. (It also has perhaps the greatest “dragon destroys Milwaukee” album cover ever.)
