Spindrift
A seven-piece band as indebted to the cowboy boot as the go-go boot, San Francisco’s Spindrift creates shaggy, reverb-steeped soundtracks to spaghetti Westerns that have yet to be made. Of course, the band’s psychedelic cowpokes have lent the shimmer of a thousand mirages to plenty of real-life films as well—its cinematic desert vistas have been married to exploitation films both vintage (J.X. Williams’ acid-scarred Tecumseh’s Curse) and faux vintage (the Quentin Tarantino-produced biker flick, Hell Ride, and The Legend Of God’s Gun, a Western co-scripted by Spindrift founder Kirkpatrick Thomas). Given the band’s raging cinephilia, the title of its 2011 LP, Classic Soundtracks, couldn’t be more appropriate; the band released separate film clips to accompany all 14 of the album’s tracks.
