Stephen Kellogg And The Sixers
As a whole, songwriter Stephen Kellogg and his band The Sixers aim to sound like a smoother Bruce Springsteen or Tom Petty—and certainly do so with less weight and personality—and they’ve avoided sounding as overly contrived as many other groups in the same mild, constrained territory. Kellogg still finds room in said territory for tasteful arrangements and mature-enough songwriting—of which 2009’s The Bear has plenty in its pop-rock mix—but the abundance of clichés still keeps the band from quite standing out. The new follow-up album, Gift Horse, continues the trend, delivering another set of solid, middle-of-the-road pop-rock for his fans.
