Stinking Lizaveta
Philly instrumental trio Stinking Lizaveta follows its own meandering muse, blending accomplished metal and math-rock while keeping it loud, slow, and fluid enough to sidestep the sludgy pitfalls that ensnare other heavy bands. The group has a pretty venerable decade and a half of history behind it, with its 1996 full-length debut recorded by Steve Albini and a track record of playing with Fugazi and recording on Joe Lally’s label. The group’s 2007 album, Scream Of The Iron Iconoclast, is a pounding piece of hard rock with the punch of metal but guitar work so fancy it could, in an alternate universe, mesh well with a jam band; its 2009 release, Sacrifice And Bliss, amps up the psychedelic freak-outs even further.
