Mystically curious singer-songwriter Stuart Davis is still calling himself a “punk monk” after all these years, and has thrown himself into many zen-seeking artistic ventures that strike some as profound and others as a tad cheesy. So it’s actually refreshing when he falls back on good-natured, if slightly dull, pop songwriting. When he’s not too full of his new-agey-junk-shop self, he can be okay at that stuff, and in 2009 he put out a collection of often pleasant, sometimes even witty tunes that accompany his online TV series, Sex, God, Rock ’N’ Roll, a chat and sketch program encompassing everything from spirituality to satire. A new record, Music For Mortals, will see a release in the first half of 2012.
