Styx
Popular ’70s AOR band Styx always displayed an above-average sense of melody and dynamics: Tracks such as “Come Sail Away” and the high-school slow-dance classic “Lady” have become rightful classics. But vocalist Dennis DeYoung’s insistence on recording overblown concept albums like 1983’s Kilroy Was Here (featuring the excellent “Mr. Roboto”) led the band to splinter; only two members from the most popular lineup—Tommy Shaw and James “JY” Young—are touring. Styx’s most recent EP, 2010’s Regeneration: Volume 1, consists of re-recordings of vintage songs (including “Come Sail Away”), and one new track, “Difference In The World.”
