Suffocation
Suffocation bludgeoned its way out of New York in the early ’90s to seal death-metal listeners into a tight corner. The blastbeats, abysmal growls, and mercilessly precise guitar batterings of early albums like Effigy Of The Forgotten and Pierced From Within not only helped to fuel a generation of “brutal death metal” and grindcore bands, they also hold up as terrifically powerful and accomplished. Suffocation has also proven to be weirdly commercial in these punishing times, hitting the Billboard 200 for the first time ever with 2009’s Blood Oath. Just goes to show that songs like “Thrones Of Blood” and “Reincremation” remain timeless in their dense, gruesome musicality—and can even prompt a documentary like the forthcoming Legacy Of Violence.
