Artist Suffocation

  • Scott Kinkade

Suffocation bludgeoned its way out of New York in the early '90s to seal death-metal listeners into a tight corner. The blastbeats, abysmal growls, and mercilessly precise guitar batterings of early albums like Effigy Of The Forgotten and Pierced From Within not only helped to fuel a generation of "brutal death metal" and grindcore bands, they also hold up as terrifically powerful and accomplished. The band's most recent phase finds it sticking to that style, and it recently began recording a follow-up to 2006's self-titled album. As Suffocation marks its 20th anniversary with the Blood Apocalypse Tour, songs (and song titles) like "Thrones Of Blood" and "Reincremation" remain timeless in their dense, gruesome musicality.
