Sugar Ray
Hate it for its breezy, “chillaxing with bros” funk rock lite all you want, but there’s something about Sugar Ray that’s always been oddly likeable, whether it’s the check-your-brain-at-the-door lyrics of reggae-tinged hit “Fly,” or just the fact that lead singer Mark McGrath thankfully never seemed to take himself very seriously. (He accepted a job hosting Extra, for crying out loud.) That self-deprecation also comes out in the band’s album titles: See 1999’s 14:59, which tweaked critics who claimed Sugar Ray's 15 minutes were almost up, and its new comeback album Music For Cougars—which features a song, “She’s Got The (Woo Hoo!),” McGrath claims was influenced by The Real Housewives Of Orange County—lovingly targeted at the band’s aging fan base.
