Suzanne Vega
Still the archetype for a folk singer not rooted in a decade before the ’80s, Suzanne Vega has commandeered a restless career since breaking big with “Luka.” She made a comeback of sorts in 2001 with Songs In Red And Gray, which sifts through the wreckage of her divorce from Mitchell Froom, producer of her genre-bending albums 99.9°F andNine Objects Of Desire. The emotionally invested subject matter found Vega leaning further back on her folk roots, even as she continued to toy with programmed beats and atmospheric sheen. In recent years, she began releasing a four-disc series titled Close-Up that reconsiders various sides of her back catalog. She also collaborated with Jonathan Coulton on 2011’s Artificial Heart, and sings a track on 2010’s Dark Night Of The Soul, the mult-artist collaboration written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.
