One of American Idol's big winners, Alabama's Taylor Hicks is also one of its redeeming factors, at least when the meddlesome music industry stands back and lets him pursue his soul and Southern-rock leanings. Beyond the requisite de-gritifying, Hicks sounded rather in touch with such Idol selections as "In The Ghetto." The single "Do I Make You Proud" didn't suit his grey-haired non-star quality quite so well, but he's since embraced his role as the adult-contempo roots-rocker next door who's not afraid to come off a little corny (in a good way). That should serve him well as he plays behind the 2009 album The Distance.
