The Antiprism
The four members of The Antiprism wear black hooded capes and mirrored aviator sunglasses onstage, which is an appropriate fit for the Madison band’s constellations of old-school metal, but also a bit misleading. Iron Maiden and black-metal melodies (sometimes played at Black Sabbath tempos) combine with the dual vocal attack of guitarist Alex Drake’s slaughter-portending growl and drummer Kristine Drake’s hissing screech on the band’s self-titled album, but it rarely feels cheesy or too self-serious. From the spacey dirge “Moonlight Overdrive” to the galloping, thrashing menace of “Ice Song” and “Exorcist,” the be-cloaked ones play it equal parts warlock and punk rock, balancing the drama with bare-bones ampage. The band’s latest, Age Of Wonders, carries forward in a similar fashion, with the title song setting fire to killer guitar harmonies and bottomless-pit vocals.
