A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist The Bad Plus

  • The Bad Plus

For all its wild innovation, jazz trio The Bad Plus has always centered on the interplay among the three musicians, bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer Dave King. Their latest disc, For All I Care, slightly changes that dynamic by adding a vocalist for the first time—Wendy Lewis of the Minneapolis alt-rock band Redstart. It’s a good fit: Lewis is a formidably soulful singer, and her longtime friendship with the band means her phrasings feel as comfortable as an old pair of shoes. One thing hasn’t changed: For All I Care is still full of the trio’s signature rock deconstructions, this time including an off-tempo take on Nirvana’s “Lithium,” as well as songs by Pink Floyd, Yes, and the Bee Gees.
