The Baseball Project
The Baseball Project is literally that: a passion project for four established rock musicians—R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, The Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn, drummer Linda Pitmon, and Young Fresh Fellows’ Scott McCaughey—about baseball. Formed in 2007, the supergroup sings about such bewildering letdowns as Pete Rose and former Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. Wynn and McCaughey belt out comedic documents of historical events in baseball and incorporate their own personal connections to the sport. That kind of love elevates this experiment from jokey territory to fairly solid musical ground, especially on the band’s recent album, Vol. 2: High And Inside, which explores roots rock (“Panda & The Freak”) to discuss colorful player nicknames and rips off some snotty pop punk (“Ichiro Goes To The Moon”) to pay tribute to one of the best hitting outfielders in the game.
