The Beets—not to be confused with the fictional band of Nickelodeon’s Doug—are part of the current tireless movement of smart-asses taking pop melodies and running them through a filter of snotty aloofness and deliberately plodding amateurism. As with their contemporaries (Vivian Girls, Wavves, etc.), results may vary: The raucously-strummed chords and buried vocals of songs like “Watching T.V.,” from 2010’s Stay Home, are certainly more affecting for the lack of polish, but probably not to those burned out on lo-fi seediness.
