Chicago's The Bitter Tears seek out the fault lines in humanity's soul and build teetering vaudevillian playhouses across them. Live, the band often dresses and acts like a gang of surrealist train-hoppers, blurring cracked, cryptic humor into the abyss-gazing lyrics and half-off-the-rails twang of the songs on this year's Jam Tarts In The Jakehouse. At a certain point, The Bitter Tears almost defy a crowd to discern what's funny and what's just plain dark.
