Artist The Black And White Years

  • The Black And White Years

Austin’s The Black And White Years emerged in the mid-’00s to a boatload of Talking Heads comparisons—an art-rock parallel that was drawn more frequently when former Head Jerry Harrison stepped up to produce the band’s self-titled debut. And while no band that gets compared to Talking Heads these days actually sounds like Talking Heads, The Black And White Years moves into the Speaking In Tongues phase of its career with 2010’s Patterns. Gone is the sinewy reggae off-beats of regional radio hit, “Power To Change,” replaced with slicker sonics and bright synth burbles, the neon glow of which is tempered by the clinical distance and nervous twitches of Scott Bulter’s lead vocals.
