Artist The Black Hollies

New Jersey's The Black Hollies like to mine the dusty grooves of the '60s, showing a convincing feel for blending soul, psychedelia, and garage-rock. While there's always the danger of just rehashing the old hits and hooks in music like this, The Black Hollies have an ear for any number of bands that impress vinyl-collecting enthusiasts but didn't necessarily stay popular on a bigger scale. Their 2008 release, Casting Shadows, is full of the retro references that make the Hollies a legitimate present-day psychedelic experience, from visions of Paisley-patterned scenes to dreams of pretty babies in the moonlight under whispering willow trees.
