Remember years ago when your friend said she fantasized about what a collaboration among members of Pretty Girls Make Graves, Hint Hint, and Cobra High would sound like? She was just fucking with you, but it turns out she’s also clairvoyant—Derek Fudesco, Peter Quirk, and Marty Lund did indeed form a band, but her guess that they’d go hyphy was way off. On their first two records—2007’s Invitation Songs and 2009’s Welcome Joy—The Cave Singers make the kind of graceful folk that sounds older than the three members combined. That tasteful maturity dictates much of the recent No Witch, though for all the steady-handed restraint, a little of that presumed hyperactivity would serve the group well.
