HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist The Crest

Madison’s The Crest formed in 1997, and since then the four-man crew has repped the questionable portmanteau "Wiscompton" with 14 albums of heavy, street-level hip-hop, including last year’s Cheerful Robots. MCs Jack Cracker and A.D., along with producers DJ Skrabble and Paul Fresh, create a triumphant noise, adding hand drums and nimble delivery to the boom-bap of “Battle,” which sets an energetic yet dark tone for the rest of the album. The Crest carries itself confidently over the album’s 16 tracks, with a little help from locals like Stephanie Rearick and Michael Sienkowski of Whatfor as well as West Coast luminary Pigeon John.
