The Deadstring Brothers
Rather than sloppily bob down the muddy Americana-rock river, Detroit's Deadstring Brothers build a sturdy raft from slide-guitar blues, country heartache, and, as nearly every listener has observed, hints of The Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street. For the record, that last part's in just the right measure: Singer Kurt Marschke draws on Mick Jagger a fair bit, but he's no slobbering imitator. Instead, the band as a whole lands a fine balance of twangy melody and hearty growl on 2010's Sao Paulo. While they certainly honor all the leathery-skinned badasses who made country and blues great, these songs are never too tough for some careful soul-searching.
