The title of The Delta Mirror’s debut LP, Machines That Listen, refers to the gizmos that are hooked into and thus keeping alive the subjects of its nine hospital-room narratives. It’s a morbid concept the band treats with washes of glitchy electronics and stacks of guitar and synthesizer—the record plays like an electro-shoegazer companion piece to The Antlers’ similarly themed 2009 record, Hospice. If the death-by-codependence elegy within “He Was Worse Than The Needle He Gave You” doesn’t entirely devastate you emotionally, then the fragile baritone in which Craig Gordon sings it will. It’s neither the first nor last time Gordon and his bandmates best the machines at communicating and regulating an intrinsically human function.
