A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist The Dollar Store

  • The Dollar Store, Jonathan Messinger

Chicago-based spoken-word show The Dollar Store—the brainchild of writer Jonathan Messinger, who hosts this touring version here—has a simple concept: Writers are given an item purchased at a dollar store, and they take a month to come up with a story based on it. Naturally, the writers lean toward the strange and/or funny, spinning oddly evocative narratives around whatever chintzy plastic crap Messinger assigns them, making for a show that’s one part workshop, one part improv comedy, and one part friends just hanging out and cracking wise.
