Artist The Evil Dead
Spider-Man director Sam Raimi established the blueprint for young filmmakers with small budgets, clever ideas, and little interest in art-for-art’s-sake with his debut film, The Evil Dead: Make a grubby genre picture loaded with ironic humor and excessive style. Of Raimi’s three Evil Dead films, the first is the most out-and-out horrific. Raimi would later essentially remake the movie as the self-consciously campier (and more fun) Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn. Although the sequel probably edges out the original in the gore department, any film in which a tree commits sexual assault is in a league of its own for inspiring nightmares.
