Los Angeles death-metal quintet The Faceless shrouds its disciplined drill-press attack in a mild progressive-rock sheen, evoking brutal stalwarts like Suffocation, but also the more evolved, melodic adventures of Death and Cynic. The band's recent albums, 2008's Planetary Duality and 2006's Akeldama, carve out spaces where shuddering jackhammer beats can duel with mystical, sci-fi-tinged dramatics. Still, The Faceless' sound comes together a bit more effectively live, where fret-nerds metal and otherwise can watch guitarist Michael Keene slither through impressively fluid and tuneful leads.
