Director Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, Fast, Cheap, And Out Of Control) centers his 2003 Oscar-winning documentary, The Fog Of War, on the historical recounts of reclusive former secretary of defense Robert McNamara. Released as the war on terrorism escalated, McNamara’s matter-of-fact explanation of the logic behind the firebombing of Japan during World War II—as well as multiple other stories of his personal and professional life—took on added emotional weight at the time, while Morris’ mindful direction provides a stunningly spacious backdrop for McNamara to unravel his lessons and for viewers to interpret them as they see fit.
