The Foreign Exchange

A few years ago, Little Brother’s Phonte Coleman got together with the incredibly tall Dutch producer Nicolay, and The Foreign Exchange was born. The collaboration went down online for two years, as the two members sent recordings back and forth to each other until they released Connected in 2004. A song from 2008’s Leave It All Behind earned the group a Grammy nomination for best Urban/Alternative Performance, and in 2010 the pair released a third album, Authenticity. Although it’s no longer necessary for the contemporary duo to only hook up virtually—Coleman and Nicolay currently live in the same state—the two prefer working separately and still shun studio time in favor of file transfers and instant messages.
