The Fresh & Onlys
The Fresh & Onlys come to town bearing the endorsements of both In The Red and Woodsist, which can only mean one thing: The San Francisco band plies scummy jangle and lo-fi recordings in the service of melodies that could’ve commanded multimillion-dollar budgets in days gone by. Thankfully, the quartet isn’t content to simply couch sparkly sounds in fuzzy surroundings, and 2010’s Play It Strange does well by the band’s unshakable weirdness, playing like a Cure demo that was exposed to direct sunlight for a couple of decades. “Do You Believe In Destiny,” from the new Secret Walls EP, applies the same acid-bath effect to martial, Roy Orbison-style balladry.
