Artist The Gay Blades

  • The Gay Blades Justin Borucki

The Gay Blades established themselves with a mix of snark, swagger, and stage names of questionable taste—yes, the drummer actually goes by “Puppy Mills.” Life has a funny way of forcing rock ’n’ roll snot-noses to mature, though, and the death of singer-guitarist Clark Westfield’s younger brother hangs over the Blades’ 2010 LP, Savages. There’s honest emotion infused throughout tracks like the punchy, Motown-indebted confessional “Try To Understand,” but Savages isn’t without doses of leavening humor—the slinky dance-floor cut “Mick Jagger” is a record-nerd inside joke that melds the downtown decadence of The Rolling Stones’ Some Girls to the baying apocalyptic atmosphere of their “Gimme Shelter.”
