HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist The Grates

Although the bass-less Australian trio The Grates has a sizeable following back home, the band’s relatively unpolished pop hasn’t quite caught on here yet (more proof that a major label doesn’t equal success). But The Grates’ sound—buoyed by the antics of comely singer Patience Hodgson—should work well in a cozy club space. Their major-label debut, 2006’s Gravity Won’t Get You High, is as cutting as it is saccharine sweet, and last year’s Teeth Lost, Hearts Won sounds like a poppier Yeah Yeah Yeahs, if that band wasn’t trying so hard to sound raw.
