The Gunshy

For this Chicago group’s fourth album, Gunshy leader Matt Arbogast looked to an unusual source for inspiration: the letters his grandfather wrote his grandmother while stationed overseas during World War II. The 2007 full-length There’s No Love In This War turns 17 of his letters into songs, from quiet laments to rollicking shanties. Arbogast’s breathy rasp makes the letters’ weary hopefulness sound especially poignant. Last year the group followed that up with the six-song EP I Gave Too Much Time To The Wine.
