The Knitters

The Knitters mosey a small area where electrified country, greasy rockabilly, and energetic punk overlap—which makes total sense, as the band features John Doe and Exene Cervenka of X and hyper-prolific gothic country-rock guitarist Dave Alvin, who served as lead guitarist for the group after the departure of Billy Zoom. The Knitters' chugging progressive-folk moves the songs along nicely, but the most powerful instrument in the group’s arsenal is the uneasy harmony of co-lead singers Doe and Cervenka, two voices that never quite become one but rely on each other to rise above plain old caterwauling. The Knitters released 2005’s The Modern Sounds Of… after a 20-year recording hiatus, so don't expect much in the way of new material.
