Artist The Life And Times

The Life And Times singer-guitarist Allen Epley, who spent a decade with Kansas City’s riff-heavy post-punkers Shiner, wasted little time starting up a new project when that band ended in 2003. In The Life And Times, he stays close to his musical roots, but takes a subtler, moodier approach to the rock that was Shiner’s specialty. The Life And Times' 2009 album Tragic Boogie was released on Arena Rock, and it's one of the rare instances when that label's name isn't being applied ironically: The Kansas City band specializes in big-and-shiny guitar sounds and barn-door drums meant for sold-out stadiums, even if the group is still plying its soaring, ’80s-inspired rock on club stages. Tragic delivers on the promises of 2005’s fine Suburban Hymns, moving toward a more distinct sound, one that comes closer to the icy post-punk shimmer of Interpol or Doves. No word yet on the band recording new material, although its members have been in the studio lately working with other bands—which is a start, at least.
