The Marshall Tucker Band
South Carolina’s Marshall Tucker Band churns out much of the same sound associated with ’70s Americana rock acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. Over the last 40 or so years, the group—through myriad lineup changes and the death of founding members Tommy and Toy Caldwell—has incorporated much of the loose, jammy feel of blues and jazz into its sound, though the latest, Soul Of The South, showcases singer Doug Gray’s affinity for classic soul. The 1973 self-titled debut went gold and cracked the charts, which the band never left until its appropriately titled 1988 album Still Holdin’ On—though the group will likely be remembered most for its 1977 hit, “Heard It In A Love Song.”
