The Mountain Goats is an omnibus name for the musical wanderings of John Darnielle, a wry troubadour whose songs scan as alternately depressing and hilarious short stories. In particular, Darnielle has flair for the disenfranchised—the drifters, drunks, and everyone else who has ever stuck around in a small town after everyone else left for the city—and he paints their pictures vividly, with plenty of pathos and an uncanny eye for lyrical detail. Over time, Darnielle’s rudimentary home recordings have given way to lush full-band efforts, and his latest, The Life Of The World To Come, is as rich and textured as any.
