The Pipettes
The Pipettes wear polka dots and play clever girl-group pop, in that order. It’s not necessarily a wrong-minded order, especially for a band that looks so good in polka dots and plays girl-group pop so clever. As a modern take on the prefab Phil Spector girl-groups of the ’60s, the group never came off as the most organic production. So the fact that Welsh blonde bombshell Gwenno Saunders was the sole Pipette to return for 2010’s Earth Vs. The Pipettes did little to alter the formula creator-guitarist Monster Bobby laid out on the debut: Unabashed pop, retro indulgence, and bubblegum beats, all filtered through a sparkling-clean indie-rock lens.
