The Raincoats
The Raincoats came from a time and place that’s become legendary: London in the late ’70s, at the beginning of the post-punk explosion that would produce acts like Public Image Limited, Orange Juice, and Gang Of Four. Never quite as severe as those other acts, the all-female Raincoats trafficked in rambunctious pop minimalism of a sort that’d go on to not only inspire the riot grrrl movement, but find a home in the hearts of acts like Sonic Youth and Nirvana. Recently, the group’s enjoyed a bit of a cred resurgence, with Neutral Milk Hotel’s elusive Jeff Mangum tapping them for the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival he’s curating this December and Kim Gordon writing the liner notes for Odyshape, the band’s recently re-issued second record.
