Lincoln, Nebraska musician Darren Keen’s flamboyance shimmers through every inch of The Show Is The Rainbow, from his seizure of synthed-up beats to his hyper, bitchy lyrics, which he alternately raps, shouts, and shrieks. 2007’sGymnasia pushes a punchy half-hour of electro-pop and hip-hop past the silly exterior, and 2009’s Wet Fist is positively Beefheartian in spots, applying the venerable Captain’s philosophy of getting weird and wild for weirdness and wildness’ sake to funk rhythms and glitchy electronics. Describing his upcoming album, Tickled Pink, Keen says, “This album is about not getting down on your former self, and being proud of who you are today. I smoke weed.”
