Artist The Sour Notes

  • Frankie Marin

Never short on hooks or ambition, The Sour Notes play brittle pop for star-crossed post-grads. Frontman Jared Boulanger knows a good deal about transitional periods, having led several versions of the band, the latest of which features scene fixture Andrew Stevens on drums and prodigal daughter Elaine Greer returning to provide the levelheaded counterpoint to Boulanger’s sick-hearted lyrics. On rising tides of lonesome guitars and glimmering synths, the band builds its postmillennial laments, occasionally nodding to Krautrock and frequently conceding to soundtrack-worthy mood. That’s certainly the case with the band’s 2011 album, Last Looks, which follows its spacey reimagining of “Harvest Moon” with an ever-pleasant range of frayed, offbeat pop.
