The attention focused on Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina has offered a small ray of sunshine for The Subdudes, bringing their ultra-traditional R&B-based Americana to the forefront of the country’s consciousness. The Subdudes have been plying their friendly-yet-anonymous trade since the mid-’80s; after parting ways briefly in 1996, they almost immediately began playing reunion shows, finally reforming officially in 2002. After taking things in a more roots-oriented, countrified direction with 2009’s Flower Petals, the band looks to take a brief hiatus in 2011, so this might be your last chance to see The Subdudes outside the Crescent City—unless you have HBO, where the band is set to appear with Lucia Micarelli during the second season of Treme.
