The Subjects

Born out of an illicit student-teacher relationship—one that involved playing music together, not statutory rape—New York quartet The Subjects came out of hiding with their 2007 debut, With The Ease Grace Precision And Cleverness Of Human Beings. Tours with likeminded groups The Walkmen and White Rabbits followed, and a subsequent EP called New Soft Shoe echoes those bands’ rollicking barrelhouse fetishism, incorporating boogie-woogie piano, skiffle rhythms, and old-fashioned harmonies with buoyant power-pop.
