HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist The Upper Crust

Boston group The Upper Crust would appear to be little more than a novelty band, dressing like 18th-century European noblemen and playing raunchy, AC/DC-inspired rock ’n’ roll about being filthy rich. Despite the obvious joke, the FBI actually launched a serious investigation into the group in 2000, fearing them to be at the crux of a proposed insurgency “seeking the establishment of an American monarchy.” Few bands make that sort of impact—let alone one this gimmicky—but besides revealing how clueless the Feds can be, it goes to show how thoroughly the group commits to its aristocratic philosophy, a meme that’s as hilarious as it is contagious. The band appears here behind 2009’s digital-only Revenge For Imagined Slights.
