The Vaselines
The Vaselines are a sleepy indie-rock band from Scotland whose stock rose considerably when Kurt Cobain sang its praises as a favorite. Their likeness to Nirvana was less than striking: Typical Vaselines songs sound twee by comparison, with a special kind of drowsy, homespun charm. The band’s core duo, Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, reunited in 2008, bringing Cobain-anointed cuts like “Molly’s Lips” and “Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam” to U.S. shores for the first time. The rawer-edged Sex With An X followed—21 years after the band’s only previous LP, 1989’s Dum-Dum.
