Last year, Whole Foods opted to stream The Weepies’ latest effort, Be My Thrill, on its website, as well as sell it next to its checkouts. Good choice, since married folk duo Deb Talan and Steve Tannen exude a non-offensive charm perfect for an afternoon of wandering up and down the aisles. Not having toured much since 2006—admirably taking the time off to raise their two sons—hasn’t affected the band’s profile much, since it keeps popping up on TV shows and commercials. Such marketing appeal could potentially turn listeners off, but that’s a shame since The Weepies expertly craft elements of airy folk and propulsive pop into thoroughly adult rock songs that swell with confident voices and consummate songwriting. That craftsmanship should be in full display here, as the band’s gone acoustic for its summer dates.
