The Whigs
The Whigs tightened up nicely around an instinct for spirited, half-bitter hooks on 2005’s Give ’Em All A Big Fat Lip and 2008’s Mission Control, bringing back a little excitement to the power-trio format, and, for some ears, the shaggy glory of early-’90s FM radio. These core elements aren’t in doubt, either, on the band’s latest, In The Dark, but it’s still not always clear what the band wants to pull off: scrappy, cranky power-pop; a bigger and more blustery sound; or some pleasing compromise? Whether or not they’ve taken much time to fuss over the bigger picture, The Whigs plunge into the individual moments—especially opener “Hundred/Million”—with admirable abandon.
